Skiing Skills, Balance

In skiing there are four skiing skills. They are Balancing movements, rotary control movements, edging control movements, and pressure control movements. Balance in skiing is the most important skill. Without balance, the ability to apply the other skills is difficult or non existent. In order to balance affectively, movement with the skis is absolutely necessary. This is accomplished by flexing the ankle forward with weight bias toward your toes. Keeping your hips in front of your feet is essential in staying in front of your skis. The thought of moving to where you want to go can keep you forward and give direction to your skis.
A good sensation to promote being forward is keeping pressure in the front tong of your boots. Not leaving go of this sensation is a real good start in staying in balance. A real good exercise to find out where you out of balance in your turns is called “Shuffle turns”. Ski making medium radius turns and shuffle four feet back and forth while skiing. Where ever in the turn you stop shuffling, that is the point in the turn you are out of balance and need to work on that part of the turn.

Hi All

I was asked by the race league to write a blog on technical skiing and racing advice. I have been teaching skiing for 19 years. I am a PSIA level III ski instructor and racer in the corporate race league. I have been asked to write a few short paragraphs on skiing and ski racing each week. Instead of writing what I want, I would like to open it up to the members of the race league, to see if they have any questions about skiing or ski racing technique.

Thank, Art
